The size is displayed in inches.
10 X 8 means 10 inches by 8 inches.
This is the dimentions of the photograhic paper and the image comes to the edge.

It should be noted that the size is reduced by cropping on some sizes.
(For instance one inch of a 10 X 8 photo will not be present on a 10 X 7 photo.)
